Our Theaters Are Coming Back!

The Balboa, Marina, New Mission, Opera Plaza, Presidio, Roxie, and Vogue have reopened full time! We eagerly await announcements from the others. They and their neighbors are counting on our support more than ever now.

SPRING 2022 UPDATES

BALBOA THEATRE, THE RICHMOND - SFNTF acquired the lease to this beloved institution in 2011. Over 1000 friends supported its conversion to digital, and it also now offers a mouth-watering selection of local and craft beers. Popcorn Popups have been a big hit in the new parklet, and CinemaSF made the Balboa the first neighborhood theater in the city to reopen on May 14th.

SUNDOWN CINEMA: FILM NIGHT IN THE PARK - SFNTF established the city’s largest outdoor film series in 2003. Over 150,000 people have enjoyed movies at Dolores Park, Marina Green, Union Square, and more. We merged with the SF Parks Alliance’s Sundown Cinema in 2019 and look forward to resuming this new tradition.

VOGUE THEATRE, PRESIDIO HEIGHTS - The city’s second-oldest surviving theater faced sale to developers when SFNTF organized a capital campaign, culminating in its purchase and preservation. After a tasteful renovation, it is creatively operated by our partners at CinemaSF. The Vogue reopened on May 29th.

MOSTLY BRITISH FILM FESTIVAL - Thanks to all who joined us at the Vogue in February 2020. Our 12th celebration of film from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, India, and South Africa was a great success! Ours was the last festival to go ahead in the city. We will be back for a lucky 13th on March 13, 2022.

Who We Are

The San Francisco Neighborhood Theater Foundation (SFNTF) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving historic movie theaters. We believe that historic theaters contribute to the unique character of neighborhoods and enhance the quality of life of city residents.

The Theater Foundation owns the Vogue and maintains the leases at the Balboa and Opera Plaza Cinemas. The Foundation has invested over $1.5 million in the Vogue, Balboa, and Opera Plaza Cinemas. The Foundation has also played a key role in the preservation of the Presidio, Marina, 4-Star, New Mission, and Harding Theaters.

Events

SFNTF produces the Mostly British Film Festival, an annual celebration of films from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, India and South Africa.

We also established the Film Night in the Park outdoor movie series in 2003 and produced it until 2018. In 2019, we merged our efforts with the SF Parks Alliance’s Sundown Cinema, and now assist them in presenting great movies in beautiful settings across the city.
